An Update: It Is What It Is

20140202-194345.jpg“We fuck everyone over with pleasure.”

This image resulted from my working out the idea from my previous post. Obviously, it’s different from the direction that my first design suggested but that’s OK – these things happen during the creative process. When you start working out an idea you never know what you’re going to end up with, but that’s the fun of the creative process – to a certain extent it’s a roll of the dice.

Although this still has a ways to go before it reaches the level that I want it to be, I can say that I like it very much; as I said in my previous post, art isn’t always supposed to be “beautiful.” I find that viewing art in such a way is limited and ultimately detrimental to the viewer’s viewing experience. Sometimes, you have to say things in the most direct way possible. This, I feel, is a completely valid approach at communicating what needs to be communicated. It’s not about being positive or negative; it’s about being honest – it is what it is – take it or leave it. You can’t worry about it.

I feel that this image is the beginning of something new and different for me and my work – something that’s been a long time coming. I believe that it is simply the natural result of growth and maturity. In order to move forward and explore new things, you have to be willing to stretch and push your own boundaries. It’s the only way – you either do it or you don’t. I offer no excuses or apologies for this new direction: it’s simply another side of who I am. I think that, ultimately, I will work up two designs of this idea – one based on the thumbnail from my first post and one on this current “sketch.” Keep an eye out for both of those on this blog in the near future.
